El Celler de Can Roca

It’s always been my opinion that birthdays are ultra important, so when I turned 30 this year, I knew the day had to be special in a BIG way. After deciding to visit Spain and France, my partner and I tried our luck getting a reservation at El Celler de Can Roca, the 2nd best restaurant in the world (2018). Luckily, we succeeded and were able to have lunch there on my birthday!

The day began with a smooch on the behind of “la Ileona” - Girona has a tradition of kissing the derrière of a stone lioness, which ensures a return visit to the city. It also brings luck! This was a fun way to start the morning.

Onto the meal, which is why you’re here: it was truly spectacular. The ambience is enchanting, the service is impeccable, and the food is everything you would expect it to be. Most notably, the plating itself was genuine art and Josep’s expert wine pairings were exceptional. We were pleased to not only meet two of the Roca brothers (Josep & Jordi), but to learn that they are humble and appreciative of their diners. I felt welcome and had a better birthday than I could have ever asked for, complete with a tiny green cake and a tall glass of bubbly.

Highly recommended: 5/5
